The Charlotte Hornets enter the 2026-27 season with a dramatically reshaped roster and a clear goal: end the franchise's long playoff drought. NBA.com has released its official season outlook for head coach Charles Lee's team, which traded away its two best players this offseason.
The Hornets will look very different. They traded All-Star guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves and forward Miles Bridges to the Phoenix Suns. In return, Charlotte added several experienced veterans to support its young core. Key additions include guards Christian Anderson, Grayson Allen, and Dennis Schröder, plus forwards Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O'Neale. Center Naz Reid also joins the frontcourt.
Subtractions include Ball, Bridges, Josh Green, and Tre Mann. The projected starting five for Coach Lee features Coby White at point guard, Brandon Miller and rookie Kon Knueppel on the wing, with Naz Reid and Moussa Diabaté in the frontcourt. On paper, it's a talented group with a fresh identity.
It's a bold strategy. The Hornets had a winning 44-38 record last season but missed the playoffs by one game after losing the 8-9 play-in game to the Orlando Magic. Trading two players entering their prime is unusual. Team leadership believed the offers for Ball and Bridges were simply too good to refuse.
Hornets president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson explained the logic to players. "Charles and I kind of explained, We believe in you guys, too," Peterson said. "You guys are here. We want to continue to see you guys grow. This is going to challenge you guys." The front office expressed strong faith in Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel to handle increased offensive roles.
That's the big question. The Hornets haven't reached the postseason since 2016. They never made it during the Ball-Bridges era. The new outlook suggests a playoff push is possible if everything clicks quickly. Coby White takes over at point guard after solid play since arriving from Chicago.
Brandon Miller is expected to become a top-15 scorer in the league, softening the blow of losing Bridges' production. Veterans like Grayson Allen and Naz Reid, who were important for Phoenix and Minnesota last season, should provide reliable rotational minutes.
The journey begins on the road against the Brooklyn Nets. The home opener at Spectrum Center is versus the Atlanta Hawks. Every game will test this new mix of youth and experience. Fans can track the team's progress and upcoming schedule on our schedule page.
The pressure is on Miller and Knueppel to lead. Coach Charles Lee must blend the new pieces fast. If they do, the Hornets could finally snap that frustrating eight-year playoff drought. It's a new chapter, and expectations are quietly growing in Charlotte.
