The Charlotte Hornets have waived forward Tre Carroll, the team confirmed, continuing their active offseason roster management.
Carroll's release is part of a broader strategy to finalize the roster for their NBA G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. The Hornets have been cycling through several players on short-term deals since late August, aiming to identify the right talent for their developmental pipeline.
Tre Carroll is a 6'8" forward who played his senior collegiate season at Xavier. In the 2025/26 campaign, he started all 32 games, averaging 17.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game. His shooting splits were .501 from the field, .333 from three-point range, and .709 from the free-throw line.
He earned All-Big East First Team honors after transferring from Florida Atlantic, where he was the AAC co-Most Improved Player. After going undrafted in June, Carroll appeared briefly for the Washington Wizards' Summer League team before signing with Charlotte. His contract almost certainly contained an Exhibit 10 clause, designed to funnel him to the Swarm.
This transaction is a procedural step in building the Greensboro Swarm's roster for the upcoming G League season. By signing and then waiving Carroll with an Exhibit 10 designation, the Hornets position him to join their affiliate. If he spends at least 60 days with the Swarm, he becomes eligible for a bonus worth up to $91,000.
Charlotte's front office has been busy. Since August 31, players like Josiah Allick, Trey Townsend, Kyle Mangas, and DJ Armstrong have had brief stints with the team. Most of these players, including Carroll, are expected to report to Swarm training camp later this fall. It's a common practice to use offseason roster spots to evaluate and assign G League talent.
While managing the back end of the roster, the Hornets' main team has shown positive signs on the court.
With Carroll's waiver, the Hornets' 21-man offseason roster spot is freed up for the next candidate. The team's basketball operations staff will likely continue this cycle of tryouts as they finalize the Swarm's lineup. The focus remains on development, identifying players who can grow within the system and potentially contribute to the NBA roster in the future.
For Carroll, the expected path is to report to Greensboro, where a strong G League season could put him back on the radar for a two-way or standard NBA contract. His college production suggests he has the tools to be an effective professional, and the Hornets' system gives him a direct path to prove it.
